A dental crown is a restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong, plus giving it the shape and appearance of a natural looking tooth. Dental crowns are also known as caps. Crowns are an ideal way to repair teeth that have broken, cracked, or have been weakened by decay, have a very large filling, have been root canal treated or be used as the final restoration for a dental implant.
When you go home, you can treat your crown as though it were your natural tooth. A crowned tooth is protected from decay, except for the gum line. You should continue an effective oral hygiene with routine of brushing twice a day and cleaning in-between your teeth daily. When you brush, the bristles cannot reach between your teeth. So, without cleaning in-between the teeth, you are missing around 30-40% of the surfaces of your teeth.
It’s important you visit your dentist for regular check-ups to have your crown and teeth assessed and the dental hygienist who will guide you to improve your oral hygiene and clean under the gum level where you cannot reach with your tooth brush.
