Fluoride is the ingredient present in toothpaste and mouthwash which helps to strengthen the teeth and prevent against tooth decay. The amount of fluoride present in oral care products only serves to benefit the teeth and does not cause any damage to other parts of the body unless it is ingested in incredibly large amounts. Many oral care products are available in the shops which claim to contain only natural or herbal ingredients, whilst this may sound beneficial often this also means that they do not contain any fluoride, therefore, the benefits are very few. Fluoride is particularly beneficial for children whose teeth are still developing, this is because fluoride use can result in stronger teeth that are more resistant to decay as the child grows up. To get the best out of fluoride it is recommended to brush the teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day, spit the excess toothpaste into the sink but do not rinse the excess away. Fluoride mouthwash can be another good use of fluoride but it is only useful if it is used at a separate time to brushing, you don’t want to wash away all of the fluoride from your toothpaste away! If you choose to use fluoride-free products you should inform your dentist and stick to a low sugar diet to avoid decay.
