You spent months (or maybe years!) getting your teeth straight, finally got the smile you wanted, and then slowly… the retainer stopped making an appearance. Sound familiar?
Perhaps you forgot it on holiday, got out of the habit, or simply decided you didn’t need it anymore. Whatever the reason, if your retainer has been sitting in a drawer for months, or even years, you’re certainly not alone.
But here’s the thing: your teeth don’t know when their orthodontic treatment is finished!
One of the biggest misconceptions about orthodontic treatment is that once your braces come off or you’ve finished your clear aligners, your teeth will stay exactly where they are.
Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.
Teeth naturally move throughout our lives. After orthodontic treatment, the tissues and fibres surrounding your teeth need time to adapt to their new positions. Even once they’ve settled, natural changes can still happen as we get older.
This is why retainers aren’t just a temporary part of treatment. They’re an important part of protecting the results you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
In short, yes!
We recommend wearing your removable retainer every night, long term, to help keep your teeth in position. Think of it as a little bit of maintenance for your smile.
It might not be the most exciting part of having straight teeth, but it’s a whole lot easier than having to straighten them all over again!
There are two main types of retainers:
Removable retainers
These are usually clear, custom-made retainers that fit over your teeth. They’re discreet, comfortable and easy to wear overnight. The important thing is consistency. Wearing them every night helps prevent unwanted movement.

Fixed retainers
These are thin wires bonded to the back of your teeth, usually behind the front teeth. They’re out of sight, so you don’t have to remember to put them in every evening. They can be a great option for maintaining tooth position, although they do need careful cleaning and regular checks to make sure they’re still securely attached.
Some patients benefit from having both types, giving their smile an extra layer of protection.
Yes, they can!
We regularly see patients at Hello Dental who have experienced orthodontic relapse. This simply means their teeth have gradually moved out of alignment following previous orthodontic treatment.
Sometimes it’s a tiny change. Perhaps one front tooth has started to twist, there’s a little crowding appearing, or your bite doesn’t feel quite the same.
For others, the movement can be more noticeable.
It’s incredibly common, and there’s absolutely no need to feel embarrassed about it. Life gets busy, habits slip and sometimes we just don’t realise how important that little retainer really is until it’s too late!
One thing we would say: if your old retainer feels tight, doesn’t fit properly or won’t go over your teeth, don’t try to force it. It may be that your teeth have already moved, and forcing it could cause damage. It’s worth having things checked before deciding what to do next.
Absolutely. And the good news is that orthodontic treatment has come a long way.
If your teeth have shifted since your original treatment, you may not need to go through the same proces all over again.
Depending on how much movement has occurred, clear aligner treatment may be a suitable option.
Clear aligners are a discreet way to straighten your teeth without traditional metal braces.
They’re custom-made, transparent trays that gradually move your teeth into a planned position. You wear them throughout the day, removing them to eat, drink anything other than water and brush your teeth.
They’re particularly popular with adults who want to make small or more noticeable improvements without everyone knowing they’re having orthodontic treatment.
And no, you don’t have to be starting from scratch! For suitable patients, treatment can focus on correcting the movement that has happened since their previous orthodontic treatment.
