Think braces are just for teenagers? Think again.
There has been a huge shift in the way we think about orthodontic treatment. Braces are no longer something reserved for children and teenagers. Increasingly, adults are choosing to straighten their teeth, improve their bite and finally get the smile they may have wished for since their teens.
And the best part? There is no age limit on wanting to improve your smile.
At Hello Dental, we see more adults exploring their orthodontic options because they want more than simply straighter teeth. They want a smile that feels right for them, a healthier bite and, quite often, the confidence to stop hiding their teeth.
This isn’t just something we’re noticing at Hello Dental.
A 2024 survey from the British Orthodontic Society found that more than 70% of orthodontists reported an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment over the previous three years.
Interestingly, the way we live and communicate now may be part of the reason. Around 60% of orthodontists surveyed said online working, socialising and video calls were influencing adults to seek treatment. With your face quite literally on screen for much of the working day, it’s understandable that people are becoming more aware of their smile.
Social media is another influence, with 38% of orthodontists reporting that influencers and celebrities were contributing to adults’ interest in orthodontic treatment.
But adult orthodontics isn’t simply about wanting a more photogenic smile.
For some people, it’s something they’ve thought about for years.
Perhaps you had braces as a teenager but your teeth have moved since. Maybe you were never offered orthodontic treatment when you were younger. Or perhaps you simply weren’t bothered by your teeth until your priorities changed.
Life milestones can also be the catalyst.
A wedding. A new job. Turning 30, 40 or 50. Returning to dating. More photographs. More video calls.
Sometimes it is simply that moment when you look in the mirror and think:
“Why am I still putting up with this?”
Whatever the reason, orthodontic treatment can be about much more than appearance.
One of the biggest misconceptions about braces is that they’re purely cosmetic.
Orthodontics is actually about how your teeth fit together as well as where they sit.
Your bite describes the way your upper and lower teeth come together. Problems such as crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites and crossbites can affect how your teeth function.
Correcting the alignment of your teeth can also make them easier to clean, while improving the relationship between the upper and lower teeth can help create a more functional bite.
The British Orthodontic Society explains that orthodontic treatment can provide both a straighter smile and a better bite, while correctly aligned teeth can be easier to maintain with brushing and flossing.
That’s why we don’t believe orthodontics should be viewed simply as a “smile makeover”.
It’s about creating a smile that works as well as it looks.
This is one of the most common questions adults ask.
The short answer is: probably not.
According to the British Orthodontic Society, age itself isn’t a barrier to orthodontic treatment. Teeth can be moved at any age provided the teeth and gums are healthy.
That means your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s or beyond doesn’t automatically rule you out.
In fact, adults can be excellent orthodontic patients because they tend to be motivated and understand exactly why they’re choosing treatment.
The important thing isn’t your age.
It’s the health of your teeth and gums, the condition of the supporting bone and your individual orthodontic needs.
A proper assessment is therefore essential before deciding which treatment is right for you.
Modern orthodontics gives adults far more choice than previous generations had.
Depending on your teeth, bite and treatment goals, options can include:
Fixed braces use brackets attached to the teeth and a wire to gradually guide the teeth into their planned positions.
They’re a tried-and-tested orthodontic treatment and remain an excellent option for many adults, particularly where more comprehensive tooth movement or bite correction is required.
And today’s fixed braces are a long way from the braces many adults remember from their childhood.

For adults who want the benefits of fixed braces but would prefer something less noticeable, tooth-coloured options can provide a more discreet alternative.
For some patients, removable clear aligners can be an excellent way to straighten teeth without traditional brackets and wires.
They’re particularly popular with adults because they are discreet and can be removed for eating, brushing and important occasions.
However, aligners aren’t automatically the best choice for everyone. The right treatment depends on the individual movement required and, importantly, the bite that needs to be achieved.
That’s why an assessment should always come before choosing the appliance. Find out more: https://hellodental.co.uk/treatment/braces-in-colchester/
This is where orthodontic assessment becomes particularly important.
A smile can look relatively straight while the bite underneath isn’t quite right.
Depending on the problem, orthodontic treatment may be used to address issues including:
Not every bite problem requires the same treatment, and some complex cases may require additional dental or specialist input.
At Hello Dental, the aim is always to understand your teeth, your bite and your goals before recommending treatment.
We’ve heard this one many times:
“I wish I’d done it years ago.”
It’s completely understandable. Adults often spend years adapting to their smile – covering their teeth when they laugh, avoiding certain photographs or simply accepting that their teeth are “just the way they are”.
But you don’t get those years back.
What you can decide is what happens next.
Orthodontic treatment isn’t about trying to look younger. It’s about investing in something you’ll use every single day: your smile.
And unlike many cosmetic treatments, the result isn’t something you simply see in the mirror. A well-planned orthodontic treatment can improve both the appearance and function of your teeth.
That’s a very personal decision.
Braces do require commitment. Treatment takes time, appointments are needed throughout the process and you’ll need to look after your teeth carefully while they’re being straightened.
And once your braces or aligners are finished, retainers are essential to help maintain the result. Teeth naturally have a tendency to move over time, which is why retention is considered an important part of orthodontic treatment.
But for many adults, the confidence that comes from finally addressing something they’ve thought about for years makes the commitment worthwhile.
Perhaps you didn’t have braces as a teenager.
Perhaps you had them and your teeth have moved.
Perhaps your teeth have always been crowded, your bite has never felt quite right or you’ve simply reached the point where you’re ready to do something about it.
It isn’t too late.
