You’ve whitened your teeth. They look brighter. So why does your crown suddenly look darker?
It’s one of those things that can catch you completely off guard.
You finish your teeth whitening, take a look in the mirror and think, “Hang on… was my crown always that colour?”
Probably not.
Well, not exactly.
Teeth whitening works on natural tooth structure. It can lift staining and lighten the natural enamel of your teeth.
A crown, however, is made from a dental material such as porcelain or ceramic. It doesn’t respond to whitening in the same way.
So if your natural teeth become noticeably lighter but your crown stays exactly the same shade, the difference can suddenly become much more obvious.
Your crown hasn’t necessarily got darker. Your teeth have just got lighter.
And that can make the crown stand out.
Before whitening, your natural teeth and crown may have been relatively close in colour.
Once your natural teeth brighten, even by a few shades, that small difference can become much easier to see, particularly if the crown is towards the front of your smile.
It can be especially noticeable in photographs, certain lighting or when you’re looking closely in the mirror.
And once you’ve spotted it?
You’ll probably keep spotting it.
Not necessarily.
If your crown is healthy, functioning well and still suitable, there may be no reason to replace it simply because you have whitened your teeth.
The important thing is to think about the order of treatment.
If you already have crowns, veneers, bonding or other restorations and you’re considering teeth whitening, it’s worth speaking to your dentist first.
Ideally, we can assess your existing restorations and discuss what you want to achieve before you start whitening.
This is where planning makes a big difference.
If you’re considering cosmetic dental treatment, we can look at the colour of your natural teeth alongside any existing restorations and talk through your options.
Sometimes whitening alone is all you need.
Sometimes an existing restoration may eventually need replacing to match your new shade.
And sometimes the best option is simply to leave it exactly as it is.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.
If you’re considering teeth whitening in Colchester, don’t just pick a shade and start bleaching.
Have a conversation with your dentist first, especially if you have crowns, veneers, composite bonding or other dental work.
At Hello Dental, we’ll look at the bigger picture rather than simply making your teeth as white as possible.
Because the goal isn’t just whiter teeth.
It’s a smile that looks natural, balanced and right for you. Find out more about Teeth whitening at Hello Dental: https://hellodental.co.uk/treatment/teeth-whitening/
