Your Guide to the First Week After Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant surgery is a big step towards restoring your smile, but what happens once you leave the dental practice?

The first week after implant surgery is all about allowing your mouth and jaw to heal. Knowing what is normal, what to avoid and when to contact your dental team can make the recovery process feel much easier.

At Hello Dental, we want our implant patients to feel informed and supported at every stage of their treatment. Here is our guide to what you can expect during the first seven days after dental implant surgery.

The first 24 hours: take it easy

Immediately after your implant surgery, your priority is rest.

You may experience some:

These symptoms are generally part of the body’s normal healing response.

Your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions based on your treatment. Follow these carefully, including any advice about pain relief or prescribed medication.

What should you eat?

For the first day, choose soft, cool or lukewarm foods that require very little chewing.

Think:

Try to chew away from the implant site wherever possible.

Avoid foods that are very hot, spicy, crunchy or hard, as these can irritate the area while it is healing.

Swelling can be normal

One of the things that can worry patients after implant surgery is swelling.

It is quite normal for swelling to develop during the first couple of days. In fact, you may find that it is more noticeable on day two or three than immediately after your procedure.

A cold compress applied externally to the cheek for short periods during the first day can help you feel more comfortable. Don’t apply ice directly to the skin.

As the week progresses, swelling should gradually start to settle.

If swelling continues to increase significantly, becomes particularly painful or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, contact your dental team.

What about brushing your teeth?

Keeping your mouth clean is important for successful healing, but you’ll need to be gentle.

Continue brushing the rest of your teeth as normal, taking care around the surgical area. Your dentist will advise you when and how to clean directly around the implant site.

Depending on your treatment, you may also be advised to use a particular mouthwash or other cleaning method.

Don’t be tempted to aggressively brush or disturb the surgical area because it looks unusual. The tissues need time to heal.

Days 2–3: your mouth is healing

By the second and third day, you may still have some swelling, bruising and tenderness.

You might also notice that your jaw feels a little stiff or that opening your mouth fully feels uncomfortable. This can happen following oral surgery and usually improves as healing progresses.

Continue with soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the implant.

This is also the time to be particularly sensible about your routine.

Give your body a chance to recover

For a few days, avoid strenuous exercise and anything that leaves you feeling overheated or exhausted. Your dentist will advise you when it is appropriate to return to your normal activities.

Smoking should be avoided because it can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.

Alcohol should also be avoided during the early healing period, particularly if you have been prescribed medication.

Days 4–5: things should start feeling easier

For many patients, this is when recovery starts to feel much more comfortable.

Swelling should be reducing and tenderness should gradually improve. You may find yourself returning to a more normal diet, although it is still sensible to avoid very hard or crunchy foods around the implant.

It is important to remember that feeling better doesn’t mean the implant has completely healed.

The implant is still integrating with the surrounding bone. This process, known as osseointegration, takes considerably longer than the initial gum healing.

So even if your mouth feels perfectly fine, continue following your dentist’s instructions.

Days 6–7: getting back to normal

By the end of the first week, many patients feel much more like themselves.

You may still have some tenderness around the area, particularly if you touch it or chew directly over it. If you have dissolvable stitches, they may still be present or beginning to loosen.

Your dental team will let you know whether you need a follow-up appointment and when you can progress back to your usual oral hygiene routine.

Remember: the first week is only the beginning of the healing process.

The implant itself can take several months to fully integrate with the jawbone before it is ready for the final restoration, depending on your individual treatment plan.

What should you avoid after dental implant surgery?

During your recovery, try to avoid:

Smoking and vaping – both can negatively affect the healing environment.

Hard or crunchy foods – these can irritate the surgical area or put unnecessary pressure on it.

Very hot food and drinks – particularly while the area is numb, as you may not realise you are burning your mouth.

Strenuous exercise – give your body time to recover.

Touching the implant with your fingers or tongue – as tempting as it may be, leave the area alone.

Missing your aftercare instructions – your dentist’s advice will be specific to your procedure, so it should always take priority over general online advice.

When should you contact your dentist?

Some discomfort and swelling are expected after implant surgery. However, if something doesn’t feel right, don’t simply wait and hope it improves.

Contact your dental practice if you experience:

If you are worried about anything during your recovery, contact your dental team for advice. It’s always better to ask.

Your implant journey doesn’t end after surgery

Dental implants are designed to provide a long-term solution for missing teeth, but successful treatment involves more than the surgery itself.

Healing, oral hygiene, regular dental examinations and professional cleaning all play an important role in protecting your investment.

At Hello Dental, we take the time to explain every stage of your implant journey, from your initial consultation through to your final smile.
